What Is Your Dream Job and What Have You Done to Work Towards It?
With so much emphasis and expectations people have on getting a job straight out of college, sometimes we forget that landing a dream job isn’t as hard as you think.
We wake up, drink a cup of coffee, commute to school, sit through lectures, do homework and projects, slave away at a part-time job, and have an internship just to do it again the next day. Sometimes we lose track of what the whole point of attending college is for. Being able to make a living doing something that we love.
Of course every one is different in the way we view happiness, but none-the-less having a career that doesn’t make you want to quit everyday takes some hustling to acquire.
The first thing that people often do is they get too comfortable. Who says that you have to work a crappy job and have your weekends detected to making minimum wage. People get comfortable while others are constantly on the job hunt looking for something better. Of course don’t quit your day job just yet, keep it while you work for other options.The only constant in this wold is change, don’t get stuck somewhere that doesn’t make you happy, get up and make a move for the better.
Take initiative to do research on what it takes to land that job. If you are looking to be a Lawyer, see what steps people have taken to get to the job you want. If you want to film animals in the rain forests, reach out to someone in the field and ask them how they got to do the work you seek after. If you are respectful and honest, people won’t mind talking about themselves, they probably love it.
It would be very beneficial to look for work as an intern or apprentice, depending on the job. Employers love when people apply for a job with experience. It’s not to say you can’t get a job without experience, but it sure does help a ton. To get an internship in the line of work you’re interested in do some research and put yourself out there. It might not be the most exciting work, but it will lead to better things and ultimately your goals, it’s worth it. Sometimes internships offer paid positions, it if that isn’t available, working for non-proffits, reaching out to individuals and asking to trade work for a mentoring is something most people won’t turn down. If you don’t ask you don’t get.
So whether your dream job is being a surf instructor in Bali or baby sitting pandas, there are steps you can take in order to pursue your goals. Take control of your career and don’t settle. Do your research, network, hustle hard, and don’t let your dreams be dreams.
