When ordering a juicy burger, most of us probably do not think about the effect that choice has on the environment. Considering that one third of the ice-free world is used for agriculture, it should not come as a surprise that it is the biggest contributor to the degradation of our environment. It does not only require huge amounts of water and feed but also a lot of land for the waste that it causes.
Don’t worry, this does not mean that you can not enjoy your favorite burger or bacon and eggs for breakfast on a Sunday morning ever again. However, we need to make more conscious choices and educate ourselves on what affects our eating habits have on our own health as well as our planets and to what extent we think it’s worth it.
Recent research has found that the western diet with an extensive amount of livestock products has a correlation to various amounts of diseases such as cardiovascular disease, obesity and cancer. Obesity is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States today and it is largely due to a person’s diet. A study conducted in Sweden found that people who eat meat typically have about a 35% higher intake of total calories in a day than do people who choose a vegetarian diet. Those 35% calories are also high in saturated fats, which is not beneficial for the health of our hearts. Not only that, products from livestock is suggested to be a leading cause of diabetes. The risk of getting type 2 diabetes increases with every 1-serving intake of red and processed meat.
Every time you choose a vegetarian meal instead of a meal that includes meat you are taking a big step for the future of humans on our planet. Your choice has in turn an impact on the farmers’ choice of how much animals to raise. If you feel like your contribution alone won’t make that big of a difference, consider this: for every two plant-based days you save approximately 2 animals lives, 40 lbs. CO2 equivalent, 2,200 gallons of water, 90 pounds of grain and 60 sq. ft. of forested land.
