AUSB’s First Wellness Group Meeting Is Happening, and We Want To See You There!

Antioch University Santa Barbara is an amazing learning community. The students, the teachers, the staff, and the environment all make the experience of going to Antioch an incredibly meaningful one. However, as we all know, where there is a university, there are stressed out students.

Throughout my time at Antioch, I have had many times where I thought the stress was going to consume me. Shuffling from class, to work, to personal life, to volunteering, to assignments, and then to bed just to wake up and do it all over again can be overwhelming at times. Our American way of life encourages a constant ‘hustle’ and we are told we are never doing enough. Unfortunately, this commendable ‘hustle’ can sometimes be too much for our bodies and minds. The stress begins to take its toll and we end up sick or making careless mistakes. Stress is inevitable in life; no matter how hard we try to avoid it, it always comes creeping in for better or worse.

Because of all this, fellow student John Teevan, Academic Success Advisor Shira Minerd, and I teamed up to start a club focused on the Antioch community’s wellness. It is called the AUSB Wellness Group. In our group meetings, we will focus on destressing, self-care, learning about ways to cope with busy lives, and having fun! We will explore topics such as emotional, physical, and financial wellness, as well as specific techniques for wellness of body, mind, and soul. It is our intention that the group will create a community of wellness on our campus.

No matter what your course of study is, come join us in creating wellness within ourselves.

This is vital for students at Antioch because in order for us to be successful in what we chose to do after graduation. We simply have to have a proper self-care practice. Our inner world will reflect itself in the  outer world. In order to do good work in the community, we must also do good work within ourselves. Many of us are already good at taking care of ourselves, so this group will be a place to share with others and spread the well-being!

The AUSB Wellness Group’s mission is to:

Promote wellness throughout the AUSB community by encouraging self-care and providing students, staff, and faculty opportunities for exploration, acknowledgement, and expression of health affirming experiences. In each meeting, we will discuss some of the ways we’re practicing our own personal wellness and include healthy habits in our meetings. Meetings may discuss topics ranging from physical to emotional to financial wellness, with opportunities for group members to lead wellness activities for the Antioch community.

Our first meeting is April 19 at 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM in room 118 on campus.

In our first meeting we will explore what we think of when we hear the word wellness, and talk about what we already do in our lives to take care of ourselves. We will also come up with ideas for what kind of things we’d like to see in  future club meetings. We will end with an easy guided meditation for relaxation and stress relief. Plus, there might even be snacks. We would love to see you there!
